European design during the first decade of the twentieth century was a crucible of theory and practice, ranging from the florid beauty of the French Art Nouveau to the roots of the German Bauhaus. Belgian designer and theorist Henry van de Velde called for the unification of art, the re-evaluation of the role of craftsman and designer, the recognition that we are able "to impress beauty upon every aspect of our lives, that the artist should no longer simply paint pictures, but rather create whole rooms, or even whole dwellings, with wallpapers and furniture as well as paintings. The Seccessionst Movement in Austria produced applied arts during the early years that are remarkable for their geometric refinement and elegant simplicity.
The Period Arts Fan Company was founded to develop authentic ceiling fans, original ceiling fans and classic fan design true to the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century architectural, interior and product design movements. Arts & Crafts, Neoclassicism, Art Nouveau, the Wiener Werkstatte, Viennese Secessionism, the Bauhaus along with Futurism and French Art Deco are fertile sources for retrospective ceiling fan designs. The Period Arts Fan Company, with a stunning ceiling selection of original ceiling fans and classic fan design, will be looking to the great American and European design movements of the past for inspiration in producing original interpretations of what could have been. These new alternatives possess the best of both worlds: period design and modern technology.
