In the past years, some people may find it unusual to install a ceiling fan outdoors. However, nowadays, many people find outdoor fans very useful. It might be because of global warming, as summer seems to be get hotter every year. Outdoor fans can help keep you cool on a hot and humid day by pushing air towards you.

Different Types of Outdoor Fans

There are two different types of outdoor ceiling fans. One is the damp-rated fans and the other is the wet-rated fans. These fans often constructed with a motor casing that is sealed to prevent moisture and other outdoor elements from getting in. If moisture gets into the motor, the fan may rust and be damaged.

The difference of damp-rated and wet-rated fans is where they can be installed. The damp-rated outdoor fans have the ability to resist moisture present in the air but not in direct contact with running water like rain. They should be installed in covered areas where they are not exposed to rain or water.

Wet-rated outdoor fans on the other hand, can be installed in a covered or uncovered location. They are made to withstand direct exposure to rain or water. This feature makes them easier to clean as well. You can just hose down the fan to wash the dirt off.

Things to Consider When Choosing an Outdoor Fan

When choosing an outdoor fan, it is important to consider the materials used. This determines if the fan will be able to withstand the harsh conditions of the outdoors.

Choose a fan that has high-grade wires. The wires should be thick to be able to carry electricity well. Check also for the insulation of the wires if they are thick enough to withstand the outdoor environment. The fan must have a good motor seal to prevent the outdoor elements from damaging the fan. Check if the motor has a water-resistant coating to prevent rust formation and prolong the life of the motor.

You should also consider the material used for the blades. Blades made of wood may look appealing and classy, but they are not the best choice for outdoor fans. Wood may rot after constant exposure to moisture and other elements.

If are not sure on what to look for in an outdoor fan, you can always ask the sales person for assistance.

Can Outdoor Fans Be Used Indoors?

The answer is yes. You can use in indoor areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms where there is high humidity. These fans will be able to cool the area and withstand the moisture.
